Blog v Wiki
Blogs and
wikis are both new media innovations. They both provide the public with
information about anything and anyone. However, the content written in blogs
can only be changed by the owners of the blog, where wiki pages can be edited
by anyone. They both allow users to comment and communicate with each other in
response to the blog post. In the article, How To Use Wikis for
Business, it describes wiki pages as, "the simplest online database
that could possibly work." Blogs can be seen as a database as well,
however it is more related to, as Kathy E. Gill puts it in her article, How can we measure the influence of the
blogosphere, "personal publishing". An example that I actually
see happening right now in front of me as I'm about to take off on my flight to
San Francisco. There is a strange and unpleasant smell on the airplane, causing
flyers to be very upset with airline and complaining profusely before we take
off. One couple, who seems to be the most annoyed with this, is video blogging
on YouTube the entire situation. They were recording the comments everyone was
making to the flight attendants (and each other), and giving their harsh
criticism on the issue. Right before take off, they stood up and demanded to
be removed from the plane. As the man was still recording while departing
the plane, the woman with him shouted, “My husband is recording this whole mess
and posting it on YouTube! He has over one million followers, and now everyone will
know how sh*tty this airline is!”
Convergence
of new things and innovations is extremely important in general, otherwise we
would be stuck living in the past and not advancing. It is even more important and
significant in today’s networked world. In my opinion, connections and
communications are what can bring someone to another level. Networking has
advanced immensely in the past decade, and mostly to benefit us. We can now
easily and quickly look up and communicate with anyone we may need.
Since the
information posted on blogs are accessible by and to anyone, there’s always
more room for collaborations. You no longer need to personally have a
connection or know someone to create a collaboration. If a business is looking
to collaborate with another company or person who may have similar ideas, they
can simply look at some blogs, and have full access and knowledge to their
thoughts and image and reach out to them if interested. They don’t even need to
be in the same country!
Hello Alyn,
ReplyDeleteWow, that is so interesting that you experienced the power of blogging right in your flight! This goes to show that the power of the internet is so influential and if something is bothering someone, they can just immediately whip out their phone and threaten to put it on the internet. The down side of this situation is that it can be easily abused.
That's a great example that you provided. There truly is a power to blogging/video blogging. You can reach a huge audience in the matter of seconds. This is great for issues like this.
